After finding critical acclaim and commercial success with her 2022 album, Sometimes, Forever, Soccer Mommy (whose real name is Sophia Regina Allison) has finally announced what's next for her: a covers EP entitled Karaoke Night, scheduled for release on September 22.
The six-song EP finds Soccer Mommy showing off the diversity of her musical tastes, tackling tracks by Pavement, Sheryl Crow, Slowdive, Taylor Swift, and R.E.M.
Despite the fact that most, if not all, of the artists covered on the EP are familiar to the average rock critic, record store employer, or Q Magazine reader, it should come as no surprise that the one that's suddenly transformed a stop-gap measure between LPs into major music news is Taylor Swift. The Swift track in question, "I'm Only Me with You," appears on the deluxe edition of Swift's self-titled 2006 debut album.
“I really wanted to cover this song because it’s one of my favorites from Taylor’s first album,” Soccer Mommy said in the press release for the forthcoming EP. “I listened to that record so much when I was a kid, and I think it had a lot of influence on me then.”
The full track listing of the EP is as follows:
Karaoke Night tracklist

2. “Soak Up The Sun” (Sheryl Crow Cover)
3. “Dagger” (Slowdive Cover)
4. “I’m Only Me When I’m With You” (Taylor Swift Cover)
5. “Losing My Religion” (R.E.M. Cover)
"Sometimes, Forever feels like a songwriter beginning to spread her wings, displaying a willingness to take her music in fresh directions," wrote The Guardian in their review of Soccer Mommy's most recent album. "'I don’t know how I’ll feel tonight,' Allison sings as the album draws to a close, “might make an impulsive decision”. Again, it’s not a reference to her creative process, but it fits the unexpected quality of Sometimes, Forever at its best: artistically at least, you hope she continues to make impulsive decisions."
Soccer Mommy initially teased the impending release of the Karaoke Night EP by dropping her version of "Soak Up the Sun," but now that we're less than a month away from its arrival, she's released the star of the show, i.e. the aforementioned Swift cover. You can check it out below.
