2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest singer-songwriters to make their mark during the 1970s: Warren Zevon, who died of mesothelioma on September 7, 2003 at the age of 56.
Earlier in the year, it looked as though Zevon fans would be able to commemorate the occasion with the knowledge that their hero – known predominantly to most mainstream fans for his song “Werewolves of London” – was on track to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In the end, that didn’t happen, but to make sure Zevon would still remain on people’s minds when this year’s Hall of Fame induction ceremonies take place, Shooter Jennings decided to... Well, actually, we'll let him explain.
"This last year we had a blast doing two separate shows paying tribute to one of my favorite artists of all time, Los Angeles legend Warren Zevon,” Jennings said in a statement. “When Zevon was picked to be potentially inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year we, along with millions of Zevon fans, were hoping that he would finally get his due in the halls of Rock & Roll History. Unfortunately, Zevon didn't make it in this year and won't be honored tomorrow night in New York City at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. Upon hearing this news, the Werewolves of Los Angeles gathered in our Wolfcave to discuss what we could do about it. We decided that even though Warren wasn't going into the Hall of Fame, we could take a special trip up to New York City this week and do our own celebration of Warren's bad-ass music.”
The lineup of the Werewolves of Los Angeles includes multi-instrumentalist Brian Whelan (Dwight Yoakum, Jim Lauderdale) alongside longtime Jennings collaborators drummer Jamie Douglass, bassist Ted Russell Kamp, and guitarist John Schreffler. Between playing the 2022 Rebels & Renegades Music Festival in Monterey, CA, the Roxy Theater during Grammy week, and a show in Brooklyn earlier this week, Jennings and his Werewolves have become masters of the Zevon catalog, and they're here to prove it to you with this live album.
