Turin’s Alfa Mito Club To Club Festival takes place 5-9 November and this year features the likes of SBTRKT, Caribou, Chet Faker and more. As a preview they’re presenting a night of the “Italian New Wave” at a one-off at London’s Village Underground on 18 September to showcase some homegrown talent. To give us a taste of what to expect from both events, organiser Giorgio Valletta has made Q a Playlist.
SBTRKT – New York, New Dorp (ft Ezra Koenig)
“His debut album has proved to be a turning point for the cross-pollination of electronic music, R&B, bass, garage and future pop, also first highlighting talents such as Jessie Ware and Sampha. After remixing the likes of Radiohead, Modeselektor, M.I.A, Basement Jaxx, and Underworld, the masked producer’s second album Wonder Where We Land is out on 22 September.”
Caribou – Can’t Do Without You
“One of electronic music’s most inventive artists and consistent creative forces, Caribou is back with Our Love, his most soulful album to date. Can’t Do Without You is the intense first single.”
Jungle – Time
“An electronic/funk/dance collective, Jungle are based around a core musical duo of lifelong friends who make mesmeric, kaleidoscopic modern soul that’s unmistakably born in the UK but has true global appeal.”
Chet Faker – Gold
“His moniker is a nod to Chet Baker’s singing style but his music also incorporates influences from a youth spent producing house and disco. This track is taken from the Australian artist’s 2014 debut album Built On Glass.”
Rustie – Attak ft Danny Brown
“His new album Green Language was influenced by nature, features Danny Brown, D Double E and Redinho, and its expansive and expressive compositions are admittedly inspired by post-rock bands such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor and My Bloody Valentine, trance and the Glasgow electronic scene he helped to mould.”
How To Dress Well – Words I Don’t Remember
“Since the release of his debut album Love Remains in 2010, Tom Krell has crafted a reputation as one of America’s most original, focused and beguiling young songwriters. Merging ever surprising production choices and aesthetic detail with a sensual but sincere R&B influence and a deep, grounded emotionality, his new album is titled What Is This Heart?.”
Kelela – Bank Head
“Kelela is a Los Angeles-based vocalist and songwriter. This track is taken from her debut mixtape, Cut 4 Me, featuring production from Fade to Mind and Night Slugs artists Bok Bok, Kingdom, Girl Unit, Nguzunguzu, Jam City and Morri$. Both R&B and pop conventions are both celebrated and challenged.”
Apparat – Black Water
“Apparat is the stage name for Berlinese musician Sascha Ring: starting out with dancefloor-oriented techno, he has been recently broadening its horizons with the release album The Devil’s Walk.”
Jessy Lanza – Strange Emotion
“Hailing from Hamilton (Ontario, Canada), Jessy Lanza studied jazz performance and piano but her main loves are R&B, hip-hop and electronic music, which she discovered through her father. Her debut album, Pull My Hair Back was co-written and co-produced with Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys.”
Ninos Du Brasil – Tuppelo
“The Italian act’s roots are in the local hardcore punk scene, but Ninos Du Brasil -led by performer and contemporary artist Nico Vascellari- add Batucada rhythms and techno to their infectious and unique mix. Cult NY label Hospital Productions has released their latest album, Novos Misterios.”
