London’s Field Day festival heads to Victoria Park this weekend (11-12 June), so to guide us through the bill organiser Tom Baker has made Q a playlist of some of his personal picks from this year’s line-up.
PJ Harvey – Is This Desire?
“This is such a beautiful song and one of so many amazing songs that PJ Harvey has. Having so-mebody as seminal as her headlining Field Day Sunday this year is going to be very special, espe-cially with it being her only London show this year.”
James Blake – I Need A Forest Fire
“We booked James Blake a while ago and have been waiting for the album for months – it didn’t disappoint. We’ve been told to expect an incredible stage show from him on Saturday night and with songs like this I know it’s going to be a set we’ll remember for a long time.”
Kero Kero Bonito – Flamingo
“These guys are brilliant – like the music from Crash Bandicoot with lyrics moving between English and Japanese so fluidly that I forget that I can’t understand half of it! It reminds me of films made by Hayao Miyazaki, like My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away.”
Four Tet – Evening
“Four Tet has played at almost every Field Day so far and even DJ-ed at our original Return To The Rural event that inspired Field Day. So glad to have him back again. A good friend and supporter of Field Day since it started in 2007!”
Air – All I Need
“What can I say about Air? It’s incredible to have them at Field Day. Everyone knows what they’re all about and what a great show it’s going to be. Will bring great nostalgic memories back of my time in Leicester at university all those many years ago.”
Orchestra Baobab – Jiin Ma Jiin Ma
“Groups like Orchestra Baobab are what make Field Day so great – they’re multinational, multi eth-nic, formed in Senegal in the 70s and fit perfectly with Field Day We consistently try to book exci-ting and interesting world acts and I’m delighted to finally get these guys on the bill.”
Floating Points – Nespole
“Floating Points has been around for ages DJing and mixing but he only released this debut album last year. He’s bringing an 11 piece band to Field Day and it’s going to be incredible, mesmerisin-gly mind blowing. Please make sure you see it!”
Wild Nothing – A Womens Wisdom
“Wild Nothing played in 2013 and were one of the highlights that year so I’m really glad to have them back. The new album is so strong and is really going to get people moving on Sunday. and as Ivor Cutler said ‘Women of the world take over cause if you don’t the world will come to an end and it won’t take long’.”
Declan McKenna – Brazil
“This is a great song – and probably the best song written about corruption in football! Field Day is all about putting on new acts and it’s so exciting to see a young talent like Declan develop over the last year. This guy will be huge – keep watching and listening and be ready.”
Steve Mason – Planet Sizes
“The Beta Band were super amazing and Steve Mason has carried on making great music as a so-lo artist. This was the first single from his new album and it’s going to sound awesome live on Field Day Sunday.”
