Coldplay have spoken exclusively about the creation of new single Adventure Of A Lifetime, which debuted online today (6 November, listen below).

The track is the first song to be unveiled from new album A Head Full Of Dreams, which will be released on 4 December, and speaking to Q’s Niall Doherty they explained it was one of the band’s most collaborative efforts.

“I was asking the rest of the band to start something and I’ll see if a song comes out from it, so not everything comes from me,” frontman Chris Martin said of the song’s starting point. “That’s how [Ghost Stories single] Magic came about. On this album it happened with Adventure Of A Lifetime. It came from Jonny’s riff. I was the last person on there.”

He added that the approach was informed by the band’s work with Brian Eno on albums Viva La Vida… and Mylo Xyloto, explaining that Eno taught them “the freedom to let everyone express themselves.”

According to bassist Guy Berryman, the track “started as a freeform musical session and was called something else, Legends or something. It had a different chord sequence and different hooks and one-by-one things were taken away and things got added.”

Guitarist Jonny Buckland suggested that Adventure Of A Lifetime exemplified the band’s relationship with Norwegian pop producers Stargate, who worked alongside long-term Coldplay collaborator Rik Simpson on the new record.

“They’d always come back with something interesting, something we’d never come up with,” he explained. “Like the cut-up vocal on Adventure Of A Lifetime. We’d worked on that song for a long time and it was quite fragile. We had to keep pruning it.”
