Canadian noir-indie lords Suuns are set to return with a new album later this year – and they’re introducing new single Translate exclusively via Q.
The video for the track – taken from album Hold/Still, released on 15 April – is premiering below now.
“The record was mostly recorded in Dallas, Texas, with bits and pieces done at home in Montreal,” explains the band’s Ben Shemie of their third studio album.
“The album features our fondness for minimalism with hardly any overdubbing and most of the tunes recorded live off the floor. Almost everything is first or second takes of the band playing the jams down. We tried to let ourselves cruise on auto-pilot. Getting a good vibe was more important than massaging the tunes into perfect renditions. As such, the tunes follow their own kind of logic. We spent more time deconstructing songs and leaving the trajectories open-ended, thus we are left with what really feels like an album with a clear A side and B-side.”
Along with being the first single from the new album, Translate itself is something of a crux point for the record.
“Translate closes side A and feels like a nice bridge between the more introspective side B of the record versus the dark boogie-down jams of side A,” Shemie tells Q.
“We’ve been playing different versions of this tune for years, now finally we got a jam that feels right. It’s right down the middle of the album and right down the middle of what influences the band – rolling synth bass, krauty beats, schizo guitar, and vague lyrics about love. Most of all, its a got a deep groove and feels good to play live.”
