The Doctor Who and Broadchurch actress on how Alanis Morissette’s 1995 debut spoke to her.

“When I first got into music in the ’90s, in my teens, I loved making cassette mixtapes so I’ve always been more into songs than LPs. So choosing albums is a fucker! But when I first saw Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know video on MTV, even though I was only 12, I felt that it talked to me as a teenage girl. The music was so un-selfconscious – plus it had rude words on it! Me and my best friend Rach learnt all the harmonies and recorded ourselves – oh God, if I could dig that tape out! But back then because big indie music was so male-dominated, artists like her and The Cranberries stood out to me because they had voices which hurt your heart. I felt like I understood their angst.”

This is an excerpt from Jodie Whittaker’s The Albums That Changed My Life from Q392.
