Playlist - Brighton's Drill Festival by the bookers

Curated by Wire with label One Inch Badge, the four day Drill Festival in Brighton will be a chance to explore the impact of the former band’s on younger musicians this December (4-7). However to prove that the event, which has taken place in London and Seattle previously – is not solely flattering the post-punks egos, Alex Murray from Brighton’s One Inch Badge, has made us a Playlist of his personal picks.

“British art-punk quartet Wire, both co-host and headline Drill. We like this track for its mix of ambience with an inevitable rock-out finish. From the 2013 record Change Becomes Us, Wire prove to be firmly in touch with their roots after reforming and releasing reworked material from their earlier catalogue.”

“We are shaking in our boots with both fear and awe at this one. A dramatic opener from the latest album To Be Kind. Swans are kicking up a huge fuss at the moment with their recent tour announcement and we can’t wait to have them come and shake up the masses in Brighton for Drill Festival.”

“One of our favourites from the dark and fuzzy debut Silence Yourself. Pained and assertive with a bass run to die for. The all- female post-punk outfit is excitingly refreshing, reviving an authentic sound of the Siouxsie era with a contemporary spin.”

“Beating the likes of FKA Twigs and Damon Albarn, Young Fathers are Mercury Prize Winners and rightly so. Indie-rap genius combining powerful lyrics with evocative, anthematic vibes. A new generation of hip-hop – who, if you’re not hooked already, are sure to win you over at Drill Fest. Signed to Anticon in 2012 who gave us the magic of Why? and Serengeti, and now signed to Big Dada who brought us Kate Tempest, these guys are set to be massive.”

“Eloquently disturbed and spitefully pained. This is a favourite of ours from their gloomy debut Annabel Dream Reader. It’s great to see a band from our own turf doing so well in their own right, after touring with so many big names such as Metz, Cloud Nothings, and Pulled Apart By Horses. It really is a no-brainer that we have them feature in our Drill line-up.”

“11min 46 of your life well spent being completely absorbed into melancholy matrimony with Mono. We watched them live at ArcTanGent Festival this summer, where a sea of hyped up festival-goers were transformed into a unified silent wave. We’re sure there’ll be a similar euphoric vibe through our Drill audience.”

“Combine harmonic perfection, a melody reminiscent of shanty-folk, an epic modern beat and the heartfelt intellect of William Doyle and you get this song. At just 22 years old, Doyle is already following in the footsteps – if not outshining the likes of James Blake and Deptford Goth after his Mercury Prize nomination.”

“The closing track from their latest record, A New Nature, and possibly the most sombre of the bunch. This track will lull you into subdued nostalgia. Another great act born out of Brighton; their sound has developed considerably since Violet Cries and Wash The Sins Not Only The Face, transcending as a mature, dreamier and haunting record. We think you’ll agree that they can only get better from here.”

“Silver Sisters is a total psych-pop dream. With remnants of Syd Barett and The Byrds, they’ve created an entirely new and modern take on psychadelia. What a record this is to behold, – it’s no surprise considering producer Nicholas Vernhes , noted for his craft on Deerhunter, Animal Collective and Dirty Projectors albums worked closely on this exhilarating debut.”
