With this year’s fancy dress theme announced as “Desert Island Disco”, the Isle Of Wight’s Bestival (4-7 September) is clearly gearing up for a big one in 2014. With the likes of Outkast, Beck, Chic and Foals set to play, we asked organiser and Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank to create Q a Playlist of his personal picks on this year’s bill. He didn’t disappoint…
Outkast – SpottieOttieDopaliscious
“From their genius Aquemini album, this track is pure sunshine funk fuelled hip hop which has eclipsed so much since. Lovely brass hook too.”
Wild Beasts – Wanderlust
“Whilst some of their peers just seem to stand still or veer off into nothingness, Wild Beasts have come back with a belter – Krautrock space age choral ecstasy, anyone?”
Darkside – Paper Trails
“Nicolas Jaar’s epic electronic rock’n’roll offshoot like Nick Cave jamming with Beefheart and Underworld.”
Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart
“Ok so it’s not all of them for obvious reasons but Peter Hook will be playing Joy Division classics and this is in my top three songs ever.”
Ady Suleiman – Serious
“I had this guy busk for my Radio 1 show outside the BBC and he nearly broke our hearts with his simple guitar and voice. Like a young Bob Marley or Sam Cooke.”
NB Serious is currently unavailable via the playlist
James Blake – Life Round Here
“It’s quite annoying just how talented James is. Incredible songwriter, producer, live performer and DJ. I might just give up now.”
Green Velvet – Flash
“Old school techno that reminds me why I got so heavily into electronic music. This is quite hard to surpass for pure energy and techy nuttiness.”
Candi Staton – Young Hearts Run Free
“I started off as a funk and soul DJ and this is a fantastic end of the night feelgood finale. Can’t wait to see her on our stage belting this out!”
Beck – Devils’ Haircut
“From Odelay. Just a classic Beck stream of consciousness rambling psychedelic epic.”
The Pharcyde – Ya Mama
“Hip hop is making such a resurgence at the moment so we’ve been going through the giants of hip hop at Bestival. Public Enemy, Wu Tang and now another classic group – The Pharcyde.”
