With her often outlandish, sparkly fashion sense (a style she has described as somewhere in between vintage, cheerleader and cartoon) it would be easy to assume that Marina And The Diamonds has lived a life of unerring joy, but it seems that is not so. Ahead of her second LP Electra Heart, out 30 April, the vocalist guides us through her personal songs heartbreak soundtrack.

“A really classic song. It is rare that songs which reference another era actually manage to not end up sounding pastiche. The whole Pierces album is great, actually.”

“My main inspiration when it comes to popular culture is Britney Spears. I have always loved her and enjoyed the innocent hyper-girly element in her image. I think people believe my admiration of her is ironic or something. I don’t know why you can’t just love big pop artists without it having some kind of ironic eye roll involved. E-Mail My Heart is very 1999 and it is on my pre-show soundtrack for the Lonely Hearts Club tour.”
