Not so much a pre-club soundtrack as stay-at-home-and-party-alone musical accompaniment, Denver-based producer True Lust’s (AKA Dillon Morton) new single Silk And Lace, with its melancholic swell of synths and dreamy disco backbeat, will prompt you to pull down the blinds, neck a cocktail or two and dance your sorrows away.
Austin, Texas’ psychedelic sons The Black Angels seem to be stuck in a perma-1967 acid flashback, in which American 60s icons like The Doors and Jefferson Airplane soundtrack journeys into both inner and outer space. Taken from these psychonauts’ latest trip, Clear Lake Forest EP, The Flop is a spiralling kaleidoscope of liquid organs and bubbling guitars.
London experimental duo Lovechilde’s forthcoming album is titled Doorway To The Cesspit (out September 1), and their music is fittingly tense and nightmarish. On Ergot On Rye, the pair belch out a dark and wonky sound which blends leftfield electronica, drone, shoegaze and noise-rock.
Imagine a parallel universe where The Cranberries hailed from Iceland instead of Ireland, and you’d hit upon the atmospheric rock ambiance of Swaying Wires, whose latest cut – much like the former’s keening output – Bluebird mixes quality songcraft, dusky textures, cutting melodies and deeply felt emotion.
Female-fronted synth pop bands are hardly in scant supply, but Fractions have a vast, dark sound that could put many of their competitors in the shade, as evidenced on their debut single Breathe.
