Slovenia’s Flow Festival will take place in Ljubljana 26-28 June. So what has a festival that’s going up against Glastonbury got to offer? Artistic Director Tuomas Kallio has made us this playlist of his picks from the bill to show if you’ve not got a ticket for the Somerset bash, Slovenia could be the closet thing.
Jose Gonzalez – Teardrop
“There are many cover songs in this world, but hearing Jose Gonzalez play Massive Attack’s Teardrop version for the first time was a big moment.”
Metronomy – The Look (pictured)
“Perfect song for the summer nights.”
Roisin Murphy – Gone Fishing
“She has reinvented herself in a good way again.”
Caribou – Can’t Do Without You
“Caribou is one of the best live acts in the electronic music scene. One of the few ones that actually can be called a live act with live musicians and yet they sound very original and electronic while playing live.”
Pet Shop Boys – West End Girls
“There are classic songs and then there are songs that have defined popular culture in so many ways. This is one of those songs. Still sounds very fresh.”
Run The Jewels – Close Your Eyes
“Run The Jewels might be the most interesting rap duo right now. A number one album for many critics in 2014.”
Edo Maajka – Saletova Osveta
“The Balkan area has very interesting music scene. The Bosnian rapper Edo Maajka is one of the big names in the region and certainly delivers very interesting combination of local flavor and contemporary hiphop.”
DJ Koze ≠ Nices Wölkchen (ft Apparat)
“One of the best tracks of the recent years from the ever so fertile Berlin electronic scene. DJ Koze is also a real character. DJ sets are known to be notorious.”
Bonobo – Cirrus
“A very easy-going yet meaningful track that has been making big waves ever since it came out.”
Recondite – Levo
“Recondite seems to be getting very hyped right now all over Europe. He is doing a special live set at Flow Ljubljana.”
Dixon – Singing (Dixon Dub)
“Dixon in addition to being number one DJ in the world two years in a row now on Resident Advisor’s listing, could also be the champion of edits and dubs.”
Ame – Mifune
“This came out when we organized the first Flow Festival in Helsinki in 2004. Ame and Dixon were playing there as well.”
Torul – Try
“A great Slovenian band with an eclectic and contemporary take on depechemodean atmosphere.”
Derrick May – Strings Of The Strings Of Life
“Derrick May is a defining character of Detroit techno and Strings Of Life a defining track of the whole scene. We are honored to have him play Flow Ljulbljana.”
