Icelandic singer Sóley Stefánsdóttir, better known as just Soley is on the bill for The Q Stage at The Great Escape Festival on 16 May at St George’s Church. We spoke to the singer-songwriter about what she’s got planned for the gig, which also features Gaz Coombes, Bill Ryder Jones and Jane Weaver.
What’s your best Brighton memory?
I’ve been to Brighton few times before and what I liked the most are the cute little streets everywhere! One time I was there right before christmas and it was very beautiful.
How would your describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard you before?
It’s hard to describe your own music but people say it’s a bit dark, my lyrics are often fairytales that don’t end really well! I play piano/organ and I also record a lot of percussion myself that I like to play with sonically. Does that help?
What have you got planned for your set? Any surprises?
I don’t know about any surprises, but every show is different! It’s going to be me with my band. I have two lovely guys playing keys, guitar and drums for me, and right now we are rehearsing live versions of songs of my new album Ask The Deep.
The Great Escape is a multi venue festival, give us your pitch to get the undecided through the doors.
It’s a delicate music – since i’m a very delicate person! – but we also try to have some dynamic on stage. I love to play for people who like to listen!
The Q Stage is in St George’s Church, the patron saint of England – what would you be the patron saint of?
Patron saint of Theater Island!
Fish’N’chips or Brighton rock?
I love Fish’N’Chip but i’m vegan – for many reasons – so i’ll go for Brighton Rock’N’Chips, please.
