Just when you might have thought Derbyshire-based scabrous sibling rockers Drenge had cornered the market in, er, scabrous sibling rock, Tynside identical twins Gallery Circus swagger into view armed with Hollywood Drip, a chest-puffed-out onslaught of slow-slung blues riffola and drum abuse that potently marks the same caustic garage-rock territory drawn up by the Loveless brothers.
Before coming together as Suns, producers Andy McDonnell and Michael Tyrell spent time honing their beat-sculpting craft alongside the likes of Mount Kimbie and Crystal Fighters. Now guided by the mastering skills of Aphex Twin and Bjork engineer, Mandy Parnell, the London duo have conjured the shadowy, infectious Temple Boy, which appears to worship at the unexpectedly complimentary altars of Michael Jackson and Depeche Mode.
Bristol noir punks Turbowolf have followed up their comeback single Rabbit’s Foot with an even more grizzled, blood-letting offering, Rich Gift, a lean cut of raging riff-rock that seems to bear its teeth to anyone who dares to cross its path.
On their home turf of Cardiff, pop-rock trio Houdini Dax have been dubbed the “fab three”, and while comparisons to The Beatles might be a tad premature (!), the trio certainly have a way with a killer pop hook, as evidenced on the funky, heady stomp of Apple Tree.
