Gorgon City – producer duo Kye Gibbon and Matt Robson-Scott – release their debut album Sirens on Monday (6 October). The pair have written Q an exclusive track-by-track guide to the new record and their collaborations.
Coming Home (ft Maverick Sabre)
The sample at the start of this track was the main inspiration for this beat, we wanted a warm positive start to the album and we loved the way all of the elements work together. When we played the chords to Maverick Sabre and Jonny Cofer, we all came up with the idea for the song – a warming notion of coming home to your loved ones.
Ready For Your Love (ft MNEK)
A game changer for us – love playing this live with MNEK. He’s a super talent and has some of the best ideas we’ve ever heard when working in the studio with him.
Lover Like You (ft Katy B)
Love the chords on this tune! In our DJ sets we play a lot of techno, especially when we’re in Ibiza, so we wanted to bring some of that influence into this track especially on the drums and FX. At first it felt like it could just be a chilled house tune in itself but when we played the track to Katy B she killed it. We’re so happy to have her on our record as we’ve always been massive fans, she’s a true UK underground hero.
Here For You (ft Laura Welsh)
We wrote this track in our studio with MNEK and Laura which was a lot of fun. We had wanted to work with Laura for a while, she’s got an amazing rich vocal quality with her own unique style and not necessarily someone you’d associate with a dance record. Although it sounds like a fairly chilled track, it’s one of our biggest tunes to play in our DJ sets.
FTPA (ft Erik Hassle)
This is one of our personal favourites, we wrote this in LA at Capitol Records. This track always reminds us of watching Erik in the vocal booth with sunglasses on completely going in singing this song! When Erik first told us his idea for the hook, we weren’t sure “fuck the pain away” is pretty strong. When he sang it it just sounded right! It’s our most R’nB sounding track on Sirens, it’s a seduction song, but with a kind of dark side to it
Go All Night (ft Erik Hassle)
We met Kiesza [Rae Ellestad, co writer] when we were supporting Rudimental in Brixton. We had heard Hideaway and loved it, this was a while before it hit radio but you could tell it was a smasher. We got her in the studio and wrote Go All Night in one day Getting Jennifer Hudson to sing on this a was very surreal, we never thought we’d have an academy award winner on our album!
Unmissable (ft Zac Able)
This song is about making the most of the moment, because nothing lasts forever. Jimmy Napes was an inspiring person to work with on this. His way of writing is very unique and when we recorded the choir on it, we learnt a lot from his directing technique.
Real (ft Yasmin)
We made this with Yasmin as an underground house tune but it unexpectedly crossed over and changed everything for us, this album never would have happened if it weren’t for this song so thanks Yasmin! This is still in every set we play. Feels like a timeless classic already.
Imagination (ft Katy Menditta)
I really love the sounds we used for the chords in this one, they remind me of UK garage. Combined with the disco drums and bassline it creates a big classic sound plus an amazing performance from newcomer Katy Menditta.
6AM (ft Tish Hyman)
This one goes off whenever we play it, we love the techno drums and bassline on this. We recorded a demo for this with Tish in LA, we had it in our bank of ideas for a while, with no beats or bass not knowing where to take it. It wasn’t until we were on a plane one day, headphones on and laptop out, we randomly put a kind of jacking house beat and bass to it and it suddenly came to life! Great to perform live with our drummer Tugg as well.
Elevate (ft Anne-Marie)
We love this, the way the chorus loops around without a definitive ending to it. Anne-Marie is a killer vocalist too.
Take It All (ft The Six)
This was a late addition to the album, a current sounding dance floor banger. Really works in the club, we;re hoping this will be a single.
Hard On Me (ft Maverick Sabre)
This song stops everyone in their tracks. The most heartfelt song we’ve ever worked on it’s so honest and real. So much so that we wanted to keep the production pretty stripped back and let the song breath, so you listen to every word. Mav is incredible on this and watching him recording it was a crazy experience.
