Tim Burgess has told Q all about one of his more unlikely collaborations, he’s cut a vinyl featuring novelist Ian Rankin.

The pair have released 12-inch A Little Bit of Powder exclusive via Oxfam shops today (1 December) which features a new short story by the writer read by actor Craig Parkinson, accompanied by theme music by Burgess and Factory Floor‘s Nik Void.

Additionally there’s a version of the theme featuring vocals by The Charlatans singer and Void on the b-side.

“I knew Ian was a big fan of vinyl and we’d swap notes on favourite records, forgotten gems and the best record shops we’d found on our travels,” Burgess tells Q of their collaboration, which is out on his O Genesis label.

“We met up in Edinburgh and we mulled over the idea of doing something together. At home when I was younger we had a few spoken word albums – classic stuff like the Orson Welles broadcast of War of The Worlds. I guessed that Ian might not have released anything on vinyl.

“When we started talking about it, he said he had the perfect story that was based on real events. I’d been working on a song that I thought fitted the mood of the story and the final piece of the jigsaw came when we talked to Oxfam about stocking it in their shops.”

The release is being stock in 21 Oxfam shops below, meanwhile get Q342, out now, for a Charlatans interview.
