New festival Looking Outside My Window is set to launch at the influential Rich Mix cinema in London this May Bank Holiday (1-5 May). Curated by artist Tupac Martir the event brings together art, dance, cuisine, cinema, performance, visuals and music across five days, and currently includes a set from James Lavelle on Sunday (4) and Múm tomorrow (3) while new documentary For Those About to Rock: The Story of Rodrigo Y Gabriela will get its UK premier. Ahead of the weekend, Martir explains what he’s got planning over the five days in a guest column for Q.
My name is Tupac Martir and I am a multidisciplinary artist and visual designer for live entertainment. My most recent pieces of work as an artist have become more and more conceptual – not in the usual sense of messed up things that amount to nothing in particular, but rather in the sense of creating experiences that themselves become the art, in conjunction with the pure forms that are also created. The interaction of people and the work creates a new form of art.
With this in mind, my next project Looking Outside My Window is about bringing people into my head and my vision of multidisciplinary experiences. Jumping from music, to cinema, onto dance then food is something made available to everyone, without going broke.
LOMW is the merging of many arts and disciplines in the same space. It is the idea that there is a world to know once you have passed your window, which is by no means restricted to anyone. The various disciplines and artists that are conveying at the Rich Mix will bring a variety of people to experience first and foremost the artist that they are coming to see, but also, to explore new and different things, that are usually not put together.
The combination of cuisine, music, dance, cinema, arts and the people performing it all, is unlike anything that I have seen in London. Yes there are food markets, takeovers, etc, but rarely are all this different artists given the same rank, to express and showcase their talents on the same level.
It is made for the public and the community, the different elements that exist are open for children, adults, people with disabilities, foodies, music lovers, techy guys, etc. It is with this combination, that we are looking to broaden the imagination of people, whether they are coming for a show or a movie, or just for the food, talks or simply to observe from the outside. To create curiosity in order to explore more in the future.
